Biography

David Taylor is an award-winning landscape and travel photographer, who was born and raised in Newcastle upon Tyne. He turned to professional photography full-time in 2006, after 18 years as a graphic artist in the computer games industry.

His first big commission involved compiling an exhaustive photographic record of the less beautiful parts of Barcelona (underground car parks, office blocks, a prison*...), for the computer games company he had left only months before. He vows at some point to return to that ravishing city, in a bid to do it artistic justice.

David’s work has taken him all over the world, from the sun-kissed beaches and aqua seas of Zanzibar to the bright chill of the Arctic Circle in the depths of winter. He sees it as a privilege to be able to follow the career he loves while discovering new places and cultures across the globe.

But his first love remains the wild countryside and rugged coastline of his home county of Northumberland, which he has photographed extensively. His work from this region has appeared in numerous national magazines, and has been used in publicity materials by local councils and tourism organisations.

David’s work is also used frequently by the Northumberland National Park Authority in its publicity and marketing materials.

Away from his photographic career – though rarely far away from his camera – David lives on an exposed, north-facing hill, overlooking the market town of Hexham in Northumberland. He shares his life with his wife, Tania, and a cat called Eric.

* He and Tania were pursued up the street, and invited to delete these images and move on, by two very charming art critics, dressed in prison guards’ uniforms and armed with sub-machine guns. They decided to comply.
