The Scottish Highlands and Islands

It’s always a thrill to visit the Scottish Highlands and Islands. No matter what the weather (and there is generally a lot of weather) there are always images to be found. However, when the conditions are right there is no finer place to be with a camera.

| Where to go?

I still remember the first time I went to Glencoe. I’d driven up from Inversnaid and Loch Lomond – a beautiful area in its in own right. Nothing prepared me for the wild splendour that is Rannoch Moor and Lochan na h-Achlaise, however. And then Buachaille Etive Mòr came into and I was utterly smitten. If you’ve not been there, go now – it’s a photographer’s dream location.

On that occasion I was only there for a day, which was far from long enough. Subsequent trips to the area have allowed me to explore nearby Glen Etive and the Pass of Glencoe, both of which are splendid too.

| Where to go next…

In 2023 I wrote 111 Places in the Scottish Highlands that you shouldn’t miss. This required me to travel widely across the Highlands, from Loch Lomond to Cape Wrath and John O’ Groats. It was an incredible opportunity to revisit familiar places and discover new locations. The problem I have now is deciding which of these wonderful locations to return to. As problems go, it’s one I’m happy to have!
