Northumberland’s Coast

It’s probably fair to say that most landscape photographers are drawn to water like bees to honey. In Northumberland there is no finer place to photograph water than on the coast.

Northumberland’s coast, from Whitley Bay in the south to Berwick in the north, is truly inspirational. It would be the work of a lifetime (and then some) to do justice to it, but it’s a challenge I’m still not tired of.

| Where to go?

I’m often asked if I have a favourite place to photograph. It’s a tricky one to answer (there are so many!) but if pressed I’d have to say Craster in north Northumberland. The village itself is charming, the rocky shoreline is dramatic and – just a short walk away – is the romantic ruin of Dunstanburgh Castle (a view that inspired Turner). It’s very easy to spend a day at Craster and not run out of things to shoot. If my ‘Groundhog Day’ was to be spent on this stretch of coast then I’d be very happy indeed.

Close runners up would include Seaton Sluice and the curiously named Charlie’s Garden, Bamburgh and the Holy Island of Lindisfarne (to use its formal name). All these places and more are represented in the gallery…
