David Taylor Landscape Photography

David Taylor is a landscape and travel photographer based in Hexham, Northumberland. David has worked all over the British Isles, from Cornwall to the Outer Hebrides in Scotland. He is particularly passionate about photographing the landscape of his home county of Northumberland. Away from the shores of Britain, David's travel photography has taken him from sun-kissed beaches in the Indian Ocean to the bright chill of Sweden in winter.

Focus on...July

It's holiday time again and to make the most of the photographic opportunities when on a trip away think about...

...Not shooting during the middle of the day. Early in the morning or late in the afternoon are generally the times when the light is at its best. Getting up early and shooting when the sun is lower in the sky has the added advantage that there are often fewer people around. Those scenes that would be spoiled by hordes of ice cream-eating tourists become much easier to shoot! And by midday, when the sun is high and the light is less flattering, there’s no need to feel guilty for spending a few hours next to the pool.

...Shooting after the sun has set too. Cities and town often look at their most romantic once the streetlights have been lit.

...Not using flash. Direct camera flash can look harsh and artificial and so should only be used as a last resort. If it’s possible to take the flash off the camera or to bounce the light off a convenient ceiling or wall that can help to create a much softer and more natural looking lighting source. In low light consider just using the available ambient light. Either open the camera lens to its widest aperture if handholding the camera (which works well for portraits as long as the eyes are in focus!) or use a tripod or other support such as a low wall. A lot of cameras now have built in image stabilization, which can be very useful in low situations too.
